“Ah, screw it”

Y’all ever find it creepy how many core experiences you share with others? I see it all the time on social media today where something I thought was unique to my life while growing up turns out to be something thousands or even millions of people experienced too. For example: intentionally dropping your phone down to your foot at the gym instead of setting it down. Blew my mind to learn there were other idiots like me that abuse their phone unnecessarily.

Another example: Saying you’re going to do something “crazy” with your friends but never following through on it. Okay, I admit this one maybe isn’t all that surprising. After all, have you ever heard of friends who didn’t believe they could make it as a podcast or reality TV show? We dream up all these cool ideas late night over TV and drinks, but we never take the leap of faith to put them into motion.

I mean heck my buddies and I just last night were talking about all these niche fitness challenges we could try: 24 miles in 24 hours, 50k steps in a day, etc. Honestly, many of them sound legitimately attainable (and I’d argue a lot of our “crazy” ideas are), but they rarely actually happen. We say “ahhhh, maybe one day but not today” and sweep it into an infinite void of the other maybe-one-days that never were.

And I found myself doing it yet again as I waited to make this first post.

“Ehhhh, I don’t really know how to write a blog yet so I’m gonna go read up on stuff first THEN I’ll try”

“It’s late, I’m gonna go to bed and come back to it tomorrow”

“I…”

No. Why wait? Why not do 24 miles in 24 hours? Why not start a podcast? So what if you suck at it or you fail? You’re already ahead of 95% of people just for getting past “maybe one day”.

When I decided to take this gap year (more on that tomorrow) back in March, I had 2 weeks to make my decision (really a wild timeline in retrospect for such a large decision lol). I didn’t have the time to agonize over the details, but it seemed like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity so I said, “ah, screw it”. And here I am.

This is my “ah, screw it” year. So I cold wrote this at 1am. I’m probably gonna look back at this and say “wow, that was hot garbage”. But I took the first step. That’s what matters most. Speaking of first step, I need to go pick a day to run 24 miles in 24 hours so I’m peacing.

If you have “crazy” ideas of your own, I’d love to hear about them – old and new faces alike. Shoot me a text or don’t, but DO take a chance. Remember:

“Ah, screw it.”
