My South America non-Itinerary Itinerary 2.0

If you’ve been following along you know what’s up with that title, but in-case you haven’t, here’s the 30-second elevator summary:

I was gonna do this.

But after being awestruck by the world and learning a few things about traveling, I’m not (but also still could technically).

I cancelled my flights, hostels, and experiences I had booked after Torres Del Paine.

Why? I want to be flexible. If I hear about something cool, I wanna be able to figure out a way to get there. If friends I’ve made are heading somewhere I want to visit, I wanna be able to align my schedule with theirs. And if a place doesn’t end up being what I hoped, I want to be able to leave.

So my new not-so-itinerary itinerary is:

LocationDates
Buenos Aires, ArgentinaJanuary 6 – March 27th, 28th, 29th, or 30th..?
Something probably like Patagonia in ArgentinaMarch 27, 28, 29, or 30th – April 5th
Torres Del PaineApril 5th – April 12th
Easter Island (maybe?)April 13th – April 17th
Something elseApril 17th – ?
Cusco?
Something else?
Chicago..?May 6th..?

I imagine that may give some of you serial-planners anxiety so if you must click out of this for your own health I suggest you do it now because this is only gonna get more chaotic when I explain that cutesy little question mark on my end date and flight destination.

Flight date first.

Met a girl in Cafayate while in Salta who at the same age as me, has done the most hands-in-the-dirt traveling… and I mean that in a good way. Talking about work exchanges that allowed her to live in Mexico for 5 weeks and spend just $20, hitch hiking around the countries she visits, living in villages with virtually zero English for weeks.

To me, that sounds incredible.

So now I might work in a hostel or on a farm in exchange to a room and food so I can save money and travel longer. Don’t ask me where cause I don’t have the slightest idea.

And the flight location…

I overpacked.

I hate the fact that I chose to bring a nice checked bag because it will at best become a nuisance the moment I leave Buenos Aires. I should have invested in a nice travel backpack instead. But at the same time, I didn’t know things would turn out this way.

So, what does that have to do with the flight location?

Well… it’s a cool like $750+ to ship a bag home… a frickin scam if you ask me. I could buy my suitcase a seat on a United flight home for the price for Christ’s sake.

So my other option is to pack mule it.

By that I mean I would effectively be giving my suitcase to a friend who’s from the US and have them bring it home with them. That way you just pay the checked bag fee of like $100. In turn, I would route my return flight to wherever my friend lives to pick unit up after my trip and maybe spend of few days exploring that area too!

Risky? Maybe. Worth it? Probably.

Andddd pretty sure that’s all for my plans. Oh, am I missing the plans part? Oops, yeah I guess I am.

Might just have to watch my map updates to figure out what I’m up to next I guess 🤷‍♂️

Chau Chau amigos 🙂
